Fasting and abstinence on Christmas Eve

Today is 23 December, a Friday.

Under the current Code of Canon Law, with approval from the Holy See, Filipinos are required either to abstain from meat, or to perform an act of penance. Before the lamentable dilution of many things that made us Catholic, 23 December was a day of fasting and abstinence. While no longer binding, it is praiseworthy and indeed noble to observe this old penance, to soften the rigidity of our gluttonous appetites with the parvity and simplicity of our meals.

There exist amongst us pockets of disagreement over which day is the traditional date. One side argues that 23 December was the date observed during the Spanish era. Another side argues that 24 December was the Spanish observance.

Once and for all, we present the timeline below:

Obsession with rank is a cultural baggage common to Filipinos. It runs the gamut from stage mothers pitting their preschoolers against each other in school singing competitions, to media networks appropriating for themselves meteoric ratings based on their statistics in hand. Companies attempt to harness the better aspects of this Filipino tendency, rebranding it as a strong bias towards excellence, but, as is almost always the case, never quite succeed in banishing its malignant expressions.

We are tempted into tracing this obsession to the agglomeration of many proverbial nations forming the proverbial Philippine state. Scattered settlements, congealed into colonies, kept in check by a combination of divide et impera and a caste system that placed importance not only on racial purity but, more importantly, on birth geography, created a regionalism that is barely masked by a fabricated linguistic unity under a national patois. This, together with the padrino system, which is anchored on a complex social and societal contract, in a multitiered and bureaucratic government, ultimately increases the burden of our obsession with rank.

Our Lady of Guadalupe is a victim of this Filipino obsession.

Traditional Calendar A.D. 2017

We now present the 2017 Traditional Liturgical Calendar, inscribed with the proper feasts of the Philippines. The theme is Sacrifice of the Altar. The ensuing vignettes are taken from the Spanish version of the calendar. Click on them to enlarge.

The calendar prints on 21 × 27.9 paper.

We will only print the standard English version of the calendar and only in this format.

As is shown above, the full calendar presents the liturgical feasts observed throughout the Philippines, according to the particular calendar of the archipelago. Due to layout constraints, and to avoid optically cluttering the calendar, we decided to include only the proper feasts of our archdioceses. All diocesan proper feasts, however, will be inscribed in the directorium. As in the previous calendar, we have not included the particular feasts of each and every barangay and municipality in the Philippines, which would require our calendar to assume encyclopaedic proportions. We included only those proper feasts in some places of notable character.

Information on holidays of obligation, external solemnities, fasting and abstinence are also available. A detailed description of the prevailing laws, with the concessions granted to the Philippines, are provided at the beginning, as well as notes in the calendar itself, where necessary.

Price is PhP 125 per calendar. As communicated to us, there is a special discount for bulk orders (more information on this to be announced).

For orders, please contact Sarah Ortiz at 0933.365.5321. You may also approach her on Sundays, before or after the 2.00 pm Traditional Latin Mass at the Most Holy Redeemer Parish in Brixton Hill, Quezon City.

For those outside Manila, and for other questions and enquiries, please send an email to anamnesis.pub@gmail.com, or send a message to www.facebook.com/CGSCOX.

Some of the pages of the draft of the calendar are available for browsing only here.

[REPOST] Consecration of the human race to the Sacred Heart of Jesus [UNCUT]

This coming Sunday will be the feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King. We are, therefore, reposting our article from last year about the text of the Consecration of the human race to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

(source)

Every last Sunday of October since 1926, Christendom renews this consecration. The original text commanded by Leo XIII has subsequently undergone at least two revisions. The last revision happened in what we can lament as the proverbial preconciliar spring cleaning, wherein Saint John XXIII expunged what Leo XIII wrote and what Blessed Pius XI elaborated on.

***

The text of the Consecration of the human race, recited on the last Sunday of October, has undergone revisions at least three times. The first text was prepared by Pope Leo XIII, which, in the encyclical Annum Sacrum, promulgated on 25 May 1899, declaring 1900 a Holy Year, he commanded to be recited on the last day of the Holy Year, to consecrate the human race to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Through a decree promulgated by the Sacred Congregation of Indulgences, dated 22 August 1906, Saint Pius X decreed that the Leonine formula should be recited in the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament on the feast of the Sacred Heart.

The Fathers of the First Provincial Council of Manila decreed (no. 452) that this Consecration should be kept in all churches in the archipelago and should be recited not only on the feast of the Sacred Heart, but after every Mass every first Fridays, as well as every time the votive Mass of the Sacred Heart is said.

XIII Anniversary of the Dedication of the Holy Cathedral Church of Cubao A.D. 2016

On 14 August 2016, Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost and Vigil of the Assumption, Mass was celebrated for the 13th Anniversary of the Dedication of the Cathedral of the Diocese of Cubao in the Parish of the Most Holy Redeemer. Assisting were members of the Societas Ecclesia Dei Sancti Ioseph – Una Voce Philippines.

LITURGICAL NOTE

In the Extraordinary Form, the anniversary of the dedication of the cathedral church of a diocese or ecclesiastic territory headed by a local ordinary is ranked as a feast of the I class, besides being a feast of the Lord, in the proper calendar of the diocese (RG 43, b). It therefore takes precedence over Sundays of the II class. Hence, the 13th Anniversary of the Dedication of the Cathedral Church of the Diocese of Cubao (I class) is preferred over the Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost (II class). In other words, the feast outranks the Sunday. On the anniversary of dedication, all twelve candles affixed to the roundels or consecration crosses on the walls of the cathedral are traditionally lit. From today’s homily, we learn that celebrating the anniversary of the dedication of a cathedral church is a powerful manifestation of our fidelity and communion with the local ordinary, who is the link between the local church and the Universal Church.

During the chanting of the Gospel; at the Consecration; before the distribution of Holy Communion.

Ut in omnibus laudetur Dominus.

Matrimony according to the Use of the Philippine Islands

On Saturday, 6 August 2016, feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, Jesús Félix Valenzuela and Junvi Estrada contracted matrimony according to the Use of the Philippine Islands, in the peace and in the presence of Holy Mother Church at the Co-Cathedral of the Epiphany of the Lord of the Archdiocese of Lingayén-Dagupan in Lingayén, Pangasinán, before Rev. Fr. Michell Joe Zerrudo of the Diocese of Cubao, chaplain and spiritual director of the Societas Ecclesia Dei Sancti Ioseph – Una Voce Philippines. Assisting were members of the Latin Mass Community of Dagupan.

PART I
Rite of Matrimony

In accordance with the ancient practice of the Church, as prescribed by the 1961 Manuale Philippinense (the last edition prior to Vatican II), the couple contracted Matrimony at one of the doors of the co-cathedral, in the presence of their witnesses, sponsors, families and friends.

The rite began with an admonition in the vernacular. The priest then exhorted everyone present to divulge any impediment in their knowledge that might invalidate the Sacrament. At the scrutiny, the priest posited three questions first to the bride and then to the bridegroom. After confirming the mutual consent of the couple, the priest—invoking the Holy Trinity, the Communion of Saints, and Holy Mother Church—having joined the right hands of the bride and bridegroom, bound them inseparably duo in carne una.
