Almanaque católico 2016

PASIUNA

Consecration of the human race to the Sacred Heart of Jesus [UNCUT]

[UPDATE: Tagalog translation added.]

The text of the Consecration of the human race, recited on the last Sunday of October, has undergone revisions at least three times. The first text was prepared by Pope Leo XIII, which, in the encyclical Annum Sacrum, promulgated on 25 May 1899, declaring 1900 a Holy Year, he commanded to be recited on the last day of the Holy Year, to consecrate the human race to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Through a decree promulgated by the Sacred Congregation of Indulgences, dated 22 August 1906, Saint Pius X decreed that the Leonine formula should be recited in the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament on the feast of the Sacred Heart.

The Fathers of the First Provincial Council of Manila decreed (no. 452) that this Consecration should be kept in all churches in the archipelago and should be recited not only on the feast of the Sacred Heart, but after every Mass every first Fridays, as well as every time the votive Mass of the Sacred Heart is said.

On 29 May 1924, feast of the Ascension, Pope Pius XI, through the bull of indiction Infinita Dei misericordia, declared 1925 a Holy Year. In a letter dated 17 October 1925, the Sacred Congregation of Rites transmitted the revised text of the Consecration of the human race to the Sacred Heart to all the ordinaries of the world, which was to be recited on 31 December of that Holy Year, as was done in 1900.

Before the closure of that Holy Year, Pope Pius XI established the feast of Our Lord Christ the King with the encyclical Quas primas on 11 December 1925, fixing it on the last Sunday of October each year that it may closely precede the feast of All Saints. In it, he describes how the Kingship of the Lord was honoured in former ages, when the feast was not yet celebrated. He mentions the enthronement of the Sacred Heart in the home as an example, which gave way to the consecration of entire cities, countries, and kingdoms to the Sacred Heart, culminating with the consecration of the entire human race commanded by Pope Leo XIII. He then commands that this consecration should be renewed each year, according to the mind of Saint Pius X, but with the text of 17 October 1925.

There was a little confusion because Saint Pius X also required the recitation of litany of the Sacred Heart after the consecration, and Pope Pius XI only mentioned the consecration. In a rescript dated 28 April 1926, the Sacred Congregation of Rites resolved the issue, declaring that on both feasts the Pian text should be used, and during each occasion should be followed by the litanies.

The Fathers of the First Plenary Council of the Philippines decreed (no. 560) that such should be observed on the feast of Our Lord Christ the King.

On 18 July 1959, through a decree from the Sacred Apostolic Penitentiary, Saint John XXIII abrogated the Pian text and promulgated his own text, curiously renaming it as the Act of dedication of the human race to Christ the King. For some reasons, some books attribute this to Pope Leo XIII, when the language is markedly different.

The Leonine text laid the foundation of the later Pian addition, obliquely referring to “all those who are enveloped in the olden heathen superstition.” The full Leonine text is below:

Whereas the Joannine text excised the two penultimate paragraphs that mentioned idolaters or Muslims, and alluded to the Jews, which were originally in the Pian text. The Joannine text—we probably cannot call it “full”—is below:

The complete text, the Pian text, of the Consecration, from 17 October 1925 to 17 July 1959, refers clearly to idolaters or Muslims, and alludes to the formerly chosen people of Israel. Below is the complete text:

The official English translation, which came with the decree of 17 October 1925, is below:

We are as of now unable to find the official Tagalog translation. Below is the Tagalog translation of the text.

However, we We also have the official Cebuano translation, published with the license of the then apostolic governor of Cebu, dated 6 July 1927, used afterwards in the archdiocese and her suffragan sees. The full text is below:

The Pian text, which was published in both Latin and Italian, was translated into French, English, German, Spanish, Portuguese, and Polish. See the rest of this entry for the translations.
